Cleaning electronics is an important part of maintenance. Not only does it help them to function properly, it also controls the spread of germs that cause serious illnesses. Fun fact: your electronic devices can harbor anything from strep and Staphylococcus to cold and flu bacteria, MRSA, norovirus, and even fecal matter. They may even be worse than a public restroom! Let’s take a look at the proper ways on how you should properly clean electronic devices.
How to Clean Electronic Devices
Normal and Touch Screens
Both normal and touch screens from televisions, tablets, mobile phones and laptops are so sensitive. Clean them with microfiber cloth by using a very light pressure. Wipe horizontally, then vertically across the screen. Dirt will be more visible on an all black or all white background. If the screen still appears dirty or greasy, use a solution of 50% distilled water and 50% vinegar. Spray onto a clean cloth and apply to a device. Wipe in the same manner. Do not turn the device on again until it is dry.
Computer Parts
The first thing to do when you are cleaning electronics like laptops and computers is to unplug them. Carefully upend the device to shake debris loose. Use an air compressor to spray between keys, and brush around them with a cotton swab. After, use a clean wet cloth to clean the keys and surfaces. Pay particular attention to frequently used keys like Enter and the space bar. Remember, alcohol should not be used on the monitor. Instead, unplug it and follow instructions as indicated in the cleaning of the touchscreen devices (above).
If your mouse is a standard laser model, you simply unplug it and gently slide it back and forth over a clean sheet of paper until no streaks appear.
DVD Players
To clean the exterior of a DVD player and buttons, use a dry microfiber cloth. This will work to remove fingerprints and germs.
Remote Controls
When cleaning remote controls, it is best to start by removing the batteries. You can use a dry toothbrush to remove the debris stuck between the control buttons. Then lightly mist a cloth with a solution that is 50% rubbing alcohol and 50% water. Keep tapping to remove excess moisture. Then wipe along sides, back and down buttons. Be careful not to allow any water to seep into the interior of the remote.
Smart Watch
Switch the watch off before cleaning. Use a solution of soap and tepid water to clean watch with a microfiber cloth. You can actually give waterproof watches a quick soap. Clean the strap vigorously with a damp cloth as they collect a lot of dirt and mildew. Be sure to be aware that your watch strap may not be waterproof even if your watch is. Avoid soaking your watch with the strap-on.
